It is with great sadness that Croquet New Zealand announces the passing of Life Member Geoff Young, who died on Saturday. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family: his wife Phyllis, daughter Dallas Cooke and her husband Keith, and their daughter Ashley.
Geoff and Phyllis have been stalwarts of New Zealand croquet since the mid-1980s, actively participating in croquet at club, regional and national level, both on and off the lawns. Geoff won several national doubles titles including the two mixed doubles titles with both his daughter Dallas and with his wife Phyllis.
In addition to his on-court achievements, Geoff’s contributions to the administration of croquet were substantial, both in New Zealand and internationally. He served as Croquet New Zealand President from 1997 to 1999, and was a dedicated member of the World Croquet Federation (WCF) Management Committee for eight years, from 2014 to 2021. Geoff’s commitment continued post-presidency, as he actively participated in various CNZ committees and was instrumental in developing the current CNZ constitution. His dedication was recognised in 2019 when he was elected a Life Member of CNZ.
Geoff’s extensive experience as a tournament manager was invaluable. He managed the 2015 WCF GC World Championship and the 2023 Under 21 WCF GC World Championship.
Geoff was a beloved and respected figure in the croquet community, known for his distinctive walk, cheerful demeanor, and sportsmanship. Alongside Phyllis, Geoff generously hosted many visitors at their Morrinsville home and beach house in Mt Maunganui.
In 2022, Geoff was honoured with induction into the World Croquet Federation Hall of Fame, a testament to his exceptional contributions to the sport.

Geoff Young’s legacy will be cherished, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
