In what was a wet weekend across the country, the tournament managers in Nelson and Canterbury were able to get play ahead and produce a fantastic set of events for the 2022/23 GC Invitations.
Nelson Hinemoa CC was the host for the Top 10 and 2nd 10 Invitations. Logan McCorkindale (South Canterbury) had a near perfect weekend, dropping only two games and winning all nine of his matches in the Top 10. This is McCorkindale’s first Yvonne Yeates title, done in impressive style with +73 net hoops.
Josh Winter (Canterbury) took 2nd place, losing only four games and two matches. Defending champion Brian Bullen (Wellington) finished third, also with 7 wins like Winter, but having lost six games along the way.
In the 2nd 10, it was Stephen Green (Nelson) who won his first ever CNZ title, winning eight matches and losing only three games for the Duncan Dixon Trophy. Jessica Bullen (Wellington) finished 2nd, with seven wins and just four dropped games. Auckland’s Nelson Morrow also won seven matches, but had six of those wins in the deciding 3rd game, finishing with five net games in a solid performance to take 3rd place.
This year’s Third 16 had ten players in a rainy Christchurch at Fendalton Park CC. The format had to be adapted to 19 hoops rather than match play in order to ensure that all players could play one another.
Kevin Freeth (Marlborough) won eight games on his way to the title and finished with +30 net hoops, also for a first ever CNZ trophy. John Borner (Canterbury) took 2nd place, winning seven matches. His only losses came to winner Freeth and third placed Gaylene Jones (Canterbury), who won six matches for +15 net hoops.
