CNZ Board

In October 2025, the Croquet New Zealand Members unanimously voted to adopt the new constitution to comply with the Incorporated Societies Act 2022. Under the new constitution a new Board was elected in late 2025 and assumed authority in early December 2025.

The New Board is:

Ivan Smith

Ivan was voted Board Chair in March 2026 to lead the Board forward. He is a keen player, member, and Past President of Matamata CC, plus President of Croquet Waikato King Country Association.
His background is International Sales & Marketing, evolving to becoming Managing Director of three separate companies. He also presided over corporate acquisitions and change management, plus operated his own soft skills and management training company
Dr Graeme Roberts (Chair)

Graeme was appointed to the Board on 4 December 2025 to fill a vacancy
Graeme is a Life Member of CNZ and a member of the Board of the World Croquet Federation (WCF) Management Committee. He is CNZ representative on the WCF International Laws Committee. Graeme began refereeing at international level in 1990, since then he has officiated at six MacRobertson Sheild contests and two WCF AC Women’s World Championships.
Graeme spent his working career in the New Zealand Public Service, within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and its predecessors.  Over a period of almost 36 years, he served as a physical sciences assessment analyst, assessments manager, intelligence coordinator, and senior and then principal policy adviser
Graeme is an inductee of both the WCF and the CNZ Hall of Fame
John Borner

John started playing croquet in 2009 after moving to New Zealand from England in 2004.
He has been a member at Cashmere Croquet Club since the beginning of the 2023/24 season and was previously a member at St Martins Croquet Club where he held various posts on the committee and for 5 years took up full responsibility for the care and preparation of their 4 full size lawns

Judith Hanratty CVO OBE

Member of Croquet England
Judith’s early career was in law. She has been called to the Bar in England (Inner Temple); in the State of Victoria, in Australia; and in New Zealand where she was educated and spent the first twenty years of her career.
She holds an LLB; LLM (Hons) and Hon LLD from Victoria University of Wellington, where she was a member of the Council and Non-Executive Treasurer for ten years until she relocated to the UK in 1986. In NZ she was also a member of the inaugural Board of Telecom NZ. She has lived in Heretaunga, near Wellington since her return to New Zealand in January 2020.

Over a period of some 30 years, she was a member of the boards of companies listed on the London and New York Stock Exchanges in the energy and insurance sectors and of UK statutory bodies including the Council of Lloyd’s of London (where she was Chairman of the Market Supervision Committee), the Gas and Electricity Markets’ Authority, the Competition Commission, and the Takeover Panel.

She has represented NZ at golf and was a member of the Board of England Golf for five years following the merger of the men’s and women’s governing bodies. She is a member of the Croquet Association in the UK.

In 2002 she was awarded the OBE for services to the oil and gas industry in the UK; and in 2007 she was appointed by HM The Queen to be a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. She is an Honorary Fellow of Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge.
